Nevada Vision Foundation is a 501(c) non-profit organization dedicated to coordinating public and private funding support for the Eye Institute of Nevada. The institute will house the Department of Ophthalmology of the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV, providing essential eye care services and research to the local community.
Nevada has excellent ophthalmologists providing great care for their patients. There are just not enough of ophthalmologists for the State's population size.
Nevada ranks 46th in the U.S. for the number of ophthalmologists per capita.
In 2022, Nevada was ranked the third-fastest-growing state in the country.
Nevada has less than 40% of the ophthalmologists needed for its population.
The majority of over 290,000 rural residents live well over an hour’s drive from the nearest ophthalmologist.
Nevada is the most populous state in the US without an ophthalmology residency program.
Las Vegas is the second-largest metropolitan area in the country without an ophthalmology residency program.
The challenges facing the State:
- A prolonged shortage of physicians
- Explosive population growth in particular with older adults
- A Hispanic population with a higher-than-average incidence of eye disease
- Access to high-quality eye care for the over 290,000 rural residents
These populations increasingly need advanced eye care to treat

A: Nevada has long experienced a shortage of eye care physicians across the state, and for many Nevadans, the best medical care has required a trip to other metropolitan areas. A 2023 National Institutes of Health study found that Nevada has among the lowest per capita number of available doctors, surgeons, and medical specialists in the country. Currently, the state has only 40% of the ophthalmologists needed to meet its eye-care needs and that gap widens each year. The Nevada Vision Foundation, through its flagship Eye Institute of Nevada, will help to address both needs by providing world-class eye care to provide eye care to the people of Nevada, while also establishing an accredited ophthalmology residency training program in affiliation with the Department of Ophthalmology at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV.
